ॐ हौं जूं सः ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृ त्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ॐ स्वः भुवः भूः ॐ सः जूं हौं ॐ।

Story /Description of Mahamrityunjay Mantra :

The story goes as , Rishi Mrikandu and his wife , Marudmati had no children. They were sad and had a desire of becoming parents . They started praying to Lord Shiva day and night . Rishi Mrikandu and his wife , Marudmati both did long tapasya (penance) and tried hard to please Lord Shiva .

Lord Shiva , who is also known as Bholenath ( Innocent ) could not see his disciples in pain and was extremely pleased with their tapasya (penance). Lord Shiva finally gave darshan to both of them and granted them a boon , which had a condition .Either the child would be very smart ,religious and extraordinary , with a a lesser life span . Else the child can be long lived but will be an ordinary child.

Rishi Mrikandu and his wife , Marudmati chose the extraordinary child .And thus the great and legendary Maharishi Markandey was born . Maharishi Markandey turned out to be an extraordinary child who was well versed with vedas and who also became an ardent follower of Lord Shiva.

One day . Maharishi Markandey learnt about his short life span and understood that he will have an untimely death .

On his destined death day , he continued to worship lord Shiva . Lord Yama ,arrived on this destined day and sprung his noose around the neck of Maharishi Markandey . Maharishi Markandey held the Shivling tight and the noose also landed on the Shivling. Lord Shiva emerged from the Shivling ,in a very ragged form and had a fight with Lord Yama and defeated Lord Yama .

Lord Yama was later revived by Lord Shiva , after Lord Yama agreed that young Rishi Markandey would not die .
