Mundan Puja is a Hindu ceremony where the baby’s hair is shaved off for the first time. It is one of the 16 Sanskars or rites of passage in a person’s life. It is done to purify the baby, remove past life sins and promote growth and intelligence.The Shaving of the hair from the newborn’s head is a gesture of purification from the previous yoni’s and free from the past. The Brahmin shaves off a part of the child’s hair , enchanting the sacred mantras. The shaven head is washed with the holy Gangajal ( water of Ganges ) and a paste of sandalwood/ turmeric is applied on the head of the kid .
Child Mundan Puja or Tonsure ceremony is also referred as Chudakarna Samskaram. t is also referred as Janma Chutki Pooja or Chutki poka puja.This is one of the mandatory sanskaram for Hindus.This puja is meant for the new born kids where their head is shaved for the first time.This is one of the 16 Sanskarams as per the Hindu Vedic Rituals .According to Hindu religious texts and scriptures , a soul experiences a human body ,only after experiencing 84 lakhs( 8.4 Million ) yonis . The shaved hair is then offered to the deity or to the holy Ganges . A shikha /chothi may also be left on the kid’s head .This is one of the main pujas and is celebrated with a quiet Pomp.
